Android hides a surprising amount of itself. Deep inside every app are individual screens and activities — a specific settings page, a particular editor, a hidden menu — that normally take half a dozen taps to reach, if you can find them at all. A shortcut to the exact screen you need turns that digging into a single tap.
A calmer, faster home screen
There is also a simple ergonomic win. Instead of a home screen crowded with full apps you open just to reach one inner screen, you can build a compact set of precise shortcuts: the exact settings page, the exact tool, the exact inbox. The phone starts to feel arranged around your habits instead of a manufacturer’s defaults, and daily tasks quietly get faster.
The classic tool for this is quick shortcut maker, a small Android app that searches every installed app’s activities and turns the useful ones into home-screen shortcuts.
Trying activities safely
Not every activity is meant to be launched directly, and a few will simply close or ask for permissions they expect another screen to grant. The sensible approach is to test a shortcut before relying on it, keep the ones that work, and delete the rest. Nothing about the process modifies the apps themselves, so experimentation is low-risk and reversible.
What an activity is, in plain terms
Every screen inside an Android app is an “activity”: the compose window in your email app, the Wi-Fi page in Settings, the scanner inside a notes app. Launchers normally open only an app’s main activity, and the rest are reached by navigating menus. A shortcut maker lists an app’s activities and lets you place any of them on your home screen as if it were an app of its own, with its own name and icon.
You can get it from quickshortcutmaker.org and start building shortcuts to your most-used screens straight away.
Everyday shortcuts people actually use
Popular examples include a direct shortcut to the battery usage screen, the tethering settings, a specific email inbox, or the hidden testing and app-info pages that technicians use constantly. Users who manage two accounts often shortcut an app’s account screen; people who troubleshoot phones for family create shortcuts to the pages they always end up hunting for. The list is personal — that is the point.
Finding things the menus do not show
Beyond convenience, exploring activities is genuinely interesting: many apps contain screens for features that are undocumented or region-specific. A good shortcut tool lets you search across every installed app, try an activity safely before committing to a shortcut, and favourite the ones you use. It is a small window into how your phone is really put together.
Quick tips for shortcut success
- Test an activity once before saving it as a permanent shortcut.
- Rename shortcuts in your own words, so they still make sense in six months.
- Group related shortcuts in one folder to keep the home screen calm.
- Revisit your shortcuts after big app updates; activities sometimes move.
Small tools that remove daily friction are the ones worth keeping. Try a handful of well-chosen shortcuts and your Android will feel noticeably more like yours.
